I picked up the book yesterday and was only able to finish about two chapters due to significant calculus homework…booo! So far I must say her writing has my interest thus far. I really liked the description of the hose that rips out the man’s innards and left him empty, much like June felt. Although gruesome, it was a unique comparison.

I got through three chapters then decided I had better draw a family tree- it helps me picture the family, and made note of the date at beginning of each chapter. (in case she starts going back and forth in time. The convent and Sister Leopolda gave me the creeps- I was fornunate not to have any nuns like that in my life( at least I don’t remember it..hmmm…)

  3. anorris Says:

I think I should do a family tree as well. Good idea mom. I will have to go back and see that description John. I am only through the third chapter (kids are preventing reading) but I am enjoying it. Sr. Leopolda is CREEPY as well. I was cracking up at the initial “scene” of them parking and having drunk love. I was thinking, “what is this book, mom?” haha. I think it painted an interesting set up for loneliness that June was feeling.

  4. Shirley Says:

it gets better- they just seem to bump into each other and whoops..there it is! LOL

  5. Meghan Says:

I’m behind due to my lack of computer. I’m going to go pick it up today, though, and get started asap.

  6. Mark Says:

Also behind here…York County Library in Virginia is super weak and didn’t have a copy. Feel free to send hate-mail. But I am buying the book tomorrow.

  7. Shirley Says:

Mark- they can’t order it in from another branch? or is it the “only” library in the system? sorry! And yeah! Meghan is reading too!

  8. Johnny Angel Says:

Don’t worry Mark Penn State’s library didn’t have it either and they have just about every book in existence. I could have had it sent from another branch but since I have so little time to read and it was going to take a few days I just bought it.

The version I bought has a family tree in the front of it which is very helpful. It shows all of the marriages and children and whether or not they are Indian marriages, catholic, illegitimate, etc. I will scan it and post it.

Mrs. Carroll, I don’t think they actually have relations when they bump into each other, that is just imagined.

Anywho, I should be done with chapter 4 or 5 tonight. I am excited to have stopped spending my free moments sitting in front of the TV!

  9. Johnny Angel Says:

    Lee-

I don’t seem to have permissions to post an image on a post. I wanted to post the family tree from my book. Let me know if you can grant me these permissions oh wise one.

  10. anorris Says:

added the family tree to the original post. let me know if anyone cannot read it. thanks John

  11. Meredith Says:

My library has only one copy, already checked out (LOL in the space on their site where they tell you where in the library to find the book, it says “Cheap replacement copies” That’s a first!!)
So I had to buy the book, only on Chapter 2 by today…
The first thing that strikes me is the raw physicality of her descriptions. I feel as though she is scratching my skin and leaving red marks. I have to say, the passage where June is drunk in the bathroom stall in the bar, brought back memories!!

  12. Mark Says:

So, after the Library failed me I went to Borders…they did not have a copy. Next I went to Barnes & Noble’s…no copy. I am going to have to go back to the library and see if another branch has it.
I think this may accurately reflect the level of culture and/or literacy in this great Commonwealth of Virginia…I did pick up the “Ernest Goes to Jail” audiobook! (No, I don’t know if it was actually a book first or not)

I hope you are all enjoying it though.

  13. Johnny Angel Says:

The scanner couldn’t get the whole family tree…the one name that is missing is Patsy Kashpaw on the far right. Good Readings to you all!

  14. anorris Says:

So, I can’t help but agree with my mom about chaper three when kashpaw and marie seem to just suddenly be “doing it”. How did that happen man?

also, the scene in the beginning with June in the car oddly reminded me of scenes from the movie Monster with charlize theron’s character. I get from the author that June is that hard woman living a hard life. Anyone else?

I’m into chapter four now…plodding away with my lack of time :)

  15. Johnny Angel Says:

I may be wrong but this is the way I interpreted that section of the chapter.

The doing it part does not actually happen, Nector is just imaging it. It kind of shows how the small, beaten, girl from a disgraceful family has taken hold of this older boy from a more prestigious family.

After the imagined sex, Marie says “I have had better.” this is followed by this text:

I know that this isn’t true because we haven’t done anything yet. She just
doesn’t know what comes next. I can hear the shake in her voice, but that
makes no difference. She still scares me. I scramble away from her,
    holding the geese in front…

Marie then realizes that Nector is concerned that the nuns may have seen the struggle on the hill and assumed that Nector took advantage of the girl. She uses this to again take control over Nector by lying and accusing him of forcing himself on her.

Again this is my interpretation. Anyone else have any thoughts?

  16. Mark Says:

Finally got the book. Long story. Starting it today.

  17. Kelly & D'Troyt (because Mark isn't home yet) Says:

Long story? He asked the people at the help desk and they were too lazy to take a look. I called from work, asked them nicely to PHYSICALLY double check, and…it was there. They put it on hold for us…

  18. Shirley Says:

    ok, a few things-
    1. I cannot see the family tree- I saw it on Lee and Alli’s computer, but not here at home. But that’s ok- I am jotting one as I go along- it helps me remember things.

    2. I disagree about Nector and Marie in the section about the GEESE. They have sex, unexpectedly, then she says “I’ve had better”
He says: I know that isn’t true, that I was just now the first, [Virgin] and I can even hear the shake in her voice, but that makes no difference.

I LOVE how this book is bringing the characters together.I just finished The Plunge of The Brave. Nector explains more about Marie and LuLu

Meg- I’m sure you can find this in your fine NYC Library-don’t buy it!

    3. Those who have purchased a newer version of this book How many chapters or stories do you have? I have a 1984 first edition and it ends with Crossing The Water, 14 stories in all.
I read on amazon that the author wrote 5 new sections and calls the book Love Medicine: A Novel (PS)
so, should we all quit after 14 sections? HAHA..I think I’ll let you all tell me about the final 5.
I apologize if I confused people with this first selection.

    4. QUIT CALLING ME MRS. CARROLL..it is Shirley on this book club! :)
    thank you
